Hey everyone! The holidays have officially landed, and I’m thrilled to share my favorite places to soak up the magic right here in Michigan’s heartland.

If you live in Washtenaw, Monroe, Lenawee, Hillsdale, or Jackson (or you’re planning a visit!), you know this region has a special kind of charm during December. Get your calendars out, grab that spiced latte, and let’s map out your festive fun from December 8, 2025, onward!

Washtenaw County: Academic Splendor & Artistic Delights

Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti offer that perfect blend of high energy and cozy winter charm.
  • Ice Skating: This is your most reliable spot for classic outdoor skating. Buhr Park Ice Arena in Ann Arbor typically opens its outdoor sheet right after Thanksgiving and offers public skate hours throughout December, including special extended hours the week of Christmas.
  • The Arts: The Nutcracker: This is a must-see! Look for performances of the holiday classic, The Nutcracker, typically running from the second weekend of December through Christmas Eve (Dec 12th–24th) at venues like the Power Center.
  • Community Procession Note: While the major Ann Arbor Jaycees Holiday Parade happened earlier (get ready to save the date for next year!), look for the ongoing Main Street Glow evening walk, which functions as a continuous light stroll.

Monroe County: Historic Glow and Lakeside Calm

Let’s dive into Monroe—it’s where rich history meets that unmistakable lakeside holiday glow we all crave.
  • Light Show Essential: The Toledo Zoo Lights (Ohio): Okay, I know this one is technically in Ohio, but it is a non-negotiable holiday tradition! The Toledo Zoo’s Lights Before Christmas features over a million lights and is usually open every night in December, typically starting around 3:00 PM.
  • Ice Skating: Monroe often relies on pop-up rinks. Check the local parks department for details on a potential pop-up rink near St. Mary’s Park, which, if installed, usually runs through New Year’s Day.
  • Festival Event: River Raisin Winter Village: While the major parades happen earlier, the downtown area hosts a Winter Village or Holiday Market near the riverfront. This typically runs on select Friday and Saturday evenings in early to mid-December.

Lenawee County: Quintessential Small-Town Christmas

The towns here, like Adrian and Tecumseh, are masters of classic holiday nostalgia. If you want that Hallmark movie feel, this is your place.
  • The Arts: Croswell Opera House Holiday Show: The historic Croswell Opera House in Adrian typically hosts a major holiday production, with performances running every weekend from the first week of December straight through until New Year’s Eve.
  • Ice Skating: Adrian Downtown Pop-Up Rink: Adrian often sets up a smaller, temporary pop-up rink downtown. If available in 2025, it usually operates during the entire month of December and is free or very low-cost for entry.
  • Community Procession: The Tecumseh Parade is a first-weekend event, but in its place, Adrian often hosts a magical Christmas Candlelight Walk or Home Tour the second weekend of December, which is a beautiful way to see historic homes decorated for the season.

Hillsdale County: Community & Winter Lights

The charm of Hillsdale shines through its community focus and beautiful college town aesthetic.
  • Ice Skating: Permanent Hillsdale Rink: Check the Hillsdale Recreation Department for public skate hours. They often manage a permanent or long-term seasonal rink that will have public skate times available throughout December, particularly during the school holiday break.
  • Family Fun: Late-Season Vendor Shows: Look for a massive craft show, often held at the fairgrounds or a local school, typically on a Saturday in mid-December (around Dec 14th).
  • Parade Alternative: County-Wide Light Tours: Hillsdale County is perfect for a self-guided light tour. Map out routes in the smaller towns like Jonesville and Reading—a great, FREE activity for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day when everything else is closed!

Jackson County: Spectacular Drive-Through Displays

Jackson really delivers on big, bold light shows that are a blast for kids!
  • Light Show MUST-SEE: Lights at MIS! The Michigan International Speedway (MIS) transforms its grounds into a dazzling path of holiday scenes. These displays typically run every evening from mid-November through the first week of January, so you have plenty of time to drive through after the blog is posted.
  • Ice Skating: Downtown Jackson Skating: Jackson often utilizes the Jackson Sports Park indoor rinks with specific holiday “open skate” sessions. Look for dedicated Family Skate Nights every Friday or Saturday in December, which run well past Christmas Day.
  • Community Event: Ella Sharp Museum Holiday Tours: The Ella Sharp Museum often hosts special historical holiday tours of the museum grounds scheduled between December 10th and 20th.
